Every story starts with a spark.
Maybe it’s a brave little snowflake on a secret mission.
Or a dragon who’s afraid of the dark.
Or a rubber duck who wants to be a pirate.
Whatever the spark, storytelling is one of the most powerful (and fun!) ways to connect with your kids, anytime, anywhere.
No prep. No supplies. Just your imagination and a few simple tools.
And yes, you can absolutely learn how.
What Makes a Good Spark?
A good spark makes you curious. It gives your imagination something to grab onto.
It might be:
A character (like a lost squirrel or a mischievous elf)
A setting (like a candy shop at midnight)
A problem (like a robot who can’t stop sneezing)
A mood, theme, or lesson (like teamwork, or the feeling of coming home)
One spark is all you need to start.
From there, stories naturally begin to take shape... especially when you follow a few simple steps.
How to Turn a Spark into a Story
Once you’ve found your spark, you don’t need to be a professional writer to turn it into a story your kids will love. You just need a basic rhythm.
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
Who is this about and what are some of their basic attributes? (Character)
What do they want or need? (Desire)
What’s in the way? (Obstacle or challenge)
What do they do about it? (Action or change)
How does it end? (Resolution or lesson)
The details can be silly, heartfelt, suspenseful, or sweet. That’s the fun of it.
In our book Creating Stories Worth Telling Your Kids, we break down this process in a way that’s easy to remember and quick to learn. In fact, most parents can start telling their first story in under an hour.
